Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts:
Strong and Successful

By any measure—be it financial performance, membership growth, world-class provider and member satisfaction, or recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as one of the best health plans in the nation—Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is a strong and successful company, well positioned to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. Our continued success is a tribute to all associates who work at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and to the strong leadership of Cleve L. Killingsworth, who assumed the role of CEO and President in July. Because the corporation recruited a first-rate, seasoned executive who has dedicated his entire life to health care, the transition was seamless and his performance has been outstanding.
As you will see from this report, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is more committed than ever to providing access to effective, safe, efficient, and affordable health care and to collaborating with leaders across the Commonwealth to transform the health care system by improving the delivery of care.
In 2001, we endowed the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation and charged it with improving access to health care for all citizens of the state. Since its inception, the Foundation's endowment has grown to $86.7 million and it has awarded more than $19 million to organizations dedicated to expanding access and reducing barriers to care. This year, through the Foundation, we have provided critically important, unbiased research and analysis to support state and federal policy makers as they work to find ways to provide coverage for the uninsured. Nowhere has there been a more intensive effort to expand coverage than here in Massachusetts.
The Board is excited about the impressive work the organization is undertaking on behalf of our members, indeed, on behalf of all residents of Massachusetts. We look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm.
