In 1846, the first successful public demonstration of using ether as an anesthetic during surgery took place at the Ether Dome at Mass General Hospital.
More than a century ago, Massachusetts earned its reputation as one of the premier medical centers in the world. At the start of the 21st century, the Commonwealth continues to enhance its position as a global leader in patient care and medical innovation.
World-class hospitals, medical schools, research laboratories, and life sciences companies distinguish Massachusetts as an undisputed leader in medical care and research. In addition, we are fortunate to have first-rate community hospitals and health centers all across the state. Greater Boston is the leading recipient of life sciences research and development funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Health care and life sciences constitute an immensely powerful economic engine for Massachusetts. Life sciences venture capital has helped to create 280 biotech companies which employ more than 30,000 workers. Health care as a whole employs more than 450,000 people and helps bring prosperity to Massachusetts and the region.
Massachusetts enjoys a unique medical culture. Unlike most medical communities, collaboration among leaders in the Massachusetts medical community is widespread. The Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, The Massachusetts Health Quality Partnership, and the Alliance for Health Care Improvement are tangible examples of the kind of collaboration that characterizes the health care system in Massachusetts.
